Best AI SEO tools for agencies (2026): hours saved vs dashboards added
· Agency Brief
Every SEO tool now sells "AI visibility". For a small agency that's a problem, not a feature: each new tracker is another report someone has to read, explain to a client and defend at renewal. So this list sorts the tools by a simpler question: does this plan take a task off your team's plate, or does it add a dashboard?
An agency owner looking at AI SEO tools usually has three questions:
- Which tool actually does SEO work for us (briefs, drafts, optimisation, publishing, fixes) rather than just measuring it?
- What does it cost per client site once you have five, ten or twenty clients?
- Is the AI-visibility tracking worth paying for, and how much of it do we get on the plan we'd actually buy?
How this list works:
- Verdicts. Each verdict (KEEP, TRY, WATCH, REVIEW or SKIP) was already published on a public Agency Brief page, linked in each section. Where we haven't published a verdict on a product, we say so.
- "Removes a task" vs "adds a report". We sorted each plan's listed features into work the tool does (writes, optimises, publishes, fixes) and things it measures (tracking, monitoring, reports). That sorting is ours, based on the vendor's own feature lists. We haven't timed any of these tools, so there are no "hours saved" numbers here, only which column each feature falls in.
- Prices. Every price was checked on the vendor's own pricing page on October 21, 2026, in USD, excluding tax. Cost per client site is our own division of the listed price by the plan's site or project limit.
Surfer: KEEP (the baseline)
Verdict: KEEP (the baseline), from Surfer SEO alternatives for agencies, and the SEO pick in our best AI tools for marketing agencies list. Tool page: /tools/surfer.
Price (checked October 21, 2026): Billed yearly, Surfer lists Discovery at $49/month, Standard at $99/month, Pro at $182/month and Peace of Mind at $299/month. The separate AI Search Analytics plan, for AI-visibility tracking only, is $82/month billed yearly (Surfer pricing). The page shows a yearly saving per plan (for example "Save $444" on Pro) but displayed only the annual prices when we loaded it.
Removes a task: document creation and optimisation (120 documents on Discovery, 360 on Standard and Pro), 1-click content optimisation, and on Pro, 1-click internal linking, content ideas and coverage gaps, templates and custom voices, a cannibalisation report and MCP, which lets Surfer data flow into the AI assistants you already use (Surfer pricing).
Adds a report: AI-visibility tracking. Standard tracks 25 prompts, in ChatGPT; Pro tracks 50 and Peace of Mind 100, refreshed daily across all the models listed (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overview and Gemini). Discovery tracks none (Surfer pricing).
Cost per client site: Surfer counts sites as brand spaces: 1 on Standard, 5 on Pro, "Unlimited*" on Peace of Mind (Surfer pricing). At Pro's $182/month for 5 sites, that's about $36 per client site a month, by our division. We covered the full ladder at 5, 10 and 20 clients in Surfer vs Clearscope for agencies.
The catch: Standard and Pro carry the same 360 documents, so upgrading buys sites, seats, tracking and MCP, not more content.
Frase: TRY (the most agency-shaped plan)
Verdict: TRY (the most agency-shaped plan), from Surfer SEO alternatives for agencies. Tool page: /tools/frase.
Price (checked October 21, 2026): Starter is $39/month billed yearly or $49 month to month (1 seat, 1 site). Professional is $103/month yearly or $129 monthly (3 seats, 5 sites). Scale is $239/month yearly or $299 monthly (5 seats, up to 10 domains). Extra seats are $29/month on Professional and Scale. There's a free 7-day trial with no credit card (Frase pricing).
Removes a task: of the tools here, Frase lists the most actual work. Scale includes 100 articles and 1,000 audit pages a month, publishing to WordPress, Webflow, Sanity or Wix, and Content Guard, which "watches 300 pages" for Google decay so you can "ship the fix". Frase's agent "publishes on its own when you let it" (Frase pricing).
Adds a report: AI Visibility (ChatGPT and Google AI on Starter, plus Perplexity on Professional and Claude and Gemini on Scale) and, on Scale, "client-ready reports you can export for every client" (Frase pricing).
Cost per client site: at $239/month yearly across 10 domains, about $24 per client site a month, by our division.
The catch: white-label reports and a branded client portal are Enterprise only (Frase pricing), so Scale's client reports carry Frase branding. Keep the self-publishing agent switched off on client sites until you've reviewed what it writes. Overages are off by default; if you switch pay-as-you-go on, Scale charges $4 per extra article, $0.40 per audit page and $0.20 per AI prompt (Frase pricing).
NeuronWriter: TRY (if budget is the constraint)
Verdict: TRY (if budget is the constraint), from Surfer SEO alternatives for agencies. Tool page: /tools/neuronwriter.
Price (checked October 21, 2026): Bronze $23/month or $230/year, Silver $45 or $450, Gold $69 or $690, Platinum $93 or $930, Diamond $117 or $1,170. NeuronWriter labels yearly billing "2 months free" (NeuronWriter pricing).
Removes a task: the content editor and AI drafting (150 documents a month on Diamond), plus, from Gold up, integrations with Search Console, WordPress and Shopify, content management, the option to use your own OpenAI key, and what the plan cards list as "Neuron API/MCP/AI Assistant" (NeuronWriter pricing).
Adds a report: very little. AI monitoring is 10 questions on Gold, 15 on Platinum and 20 on Diamond, with an add-on for more questions and models (NeuronWriter pricing). For an agency that doesn't want another dashboard, that's arguably a plus.
Cost per client site: NeuronWriter counts projects, not seats: Diamond includes 50 projects and unlimited team members. At $1,170 a year, that's under $2 per project a month ($1,170 ÷ 12 ÷ 50 = $1.95).
The catch: we haven't compared its recommendations against Surfer's on the same brief. Run both on one brief before you switch. Its refund policy covers the first plan you buy, within 30 days (NeuronWriter pricing).
Clearscope: WATCH (unlimited users, but drafts cap at 20 a month)
Verdict: WATCH (unlimited users, but drafts cap at 20 a month), from Surfer vs Clearscope for agencies. Tool page: /tools/clearscope.
Price (checked October 21, 2026): Essentials is $129/month (50 tracked queries, 50 pages, 20 monthly Topic Explorations, 20 monthly drafts). Business is $399/month (300 tracked queries, 300 pages, 50 monthly Topic Explorations, 20 monthly drafts, dedicated account manager). Enterprise is custom. The page shows no annual price, says there's no minimum contract on monthly plans, and advertises a 14-day free trial (Clearscope pricing).
Removes a task: drafts and Topic Explorations, capped at 20 drafts a month on both self-serve tiers (Clearscope pricing).
Adds a report: most of what separates Business from Essentials is measurement: more tracked queries across ChatGPT and Gemini, and more monitored pages (Clearscope pricing).
Cost per client site: unlimited users and unlimited projects on every plan (Clearscope pricing), so there's no per-site figure. Your cost is driven by drafts: past 20 a month you're buying the draft add-on, listed at $50 per 10 on Essentials.
The catch: moving up to Business at $399 adds tracking and monitoring, not drafting volume. That's the clearest "dashboard, not hours" upgrade on this list.
Semrush: research KEEP, no verdict on the paid plans yet
Verdict: our KEEP (as pitch ammunition) is for Semrush's AI Visibility Index research, from Issue #2, which you can read in our free sample issue. We haven't published a verdict on Semrush's paid plans. Tool page: /tools/semrush.
Price (checked October 21, 2026): Semrush's pricing page now displays plan prices. SEO is $139 monthly or $117.33/month billed annually (5 websites, 500 keywords tracked daily). Starter (SEO + AI Search) is $199 monthly or $165.17/month billed annually, adding MCP access and 50 AI prompts tracked daily for 1 domain. Pro+ is $299 monthly or $248.17/month billed annually (15 websites, 1,500 keywords, 100 prompts, plus content optimisation). Advanced is custom. Additional users start at $45/month, and a white-label Pro Report add-on is $20/month (Semrush pricing).
Removes a task: keyword research, site audits and, on Pro+, content optimisation and keyword cannibalisation analysis (Semrush pricing).
Adds a report: most of the plan. Position tracking, AI visibility reports, AI sentiment monitoring and prompt tracking are all measurement (Semrush pricing). That can be what you sell, if AI-visibility reporting is a line on your retainer. Remember Semrush's own finding that being mentioned in AI answers isn't the same as being cited (Semrush).
Cost per client site: Pro+ at $248.17/month billed annually across 15 websites is about $17 per site a month, by our division. Starter at $165.17 across 5 websites is about $33, though its AI tracking covers 1 domain.
The catch: extra users are paid add-ons, and white-labelled client reports are a separate add-on.
Also on our radar: Miracly is on WATCH (it's pitching against you), from Issue #2. It sells GEO audits direct to brands, and its pricing FAQ says agencies running several brands take one subscription per brand (Miracly pricing).

How to test before you buy
- List the tasks you'd hand over. Briefs, drafts, optimisation passes, internal links, publishing, decay fixes. If a plan's upgrade doesn't take one of those off your list, it's a dashboard upgrade.
- Time one brief end to end in two tools. Same keyword, same writer, from blank page to client-ready draft. That's the hours-saved number we can't give you, and it's the only one that matters for your margin.
- Decide who reads the tracker. If nobody on the team will turn AI-visibility data into a client recommendation each month, don't pay a tier up for more prompts.
- Price per client, not per plan. Use the side-by-side table above, then check the limit you'll hit first: sites, documents, drafts or seats.
Verdict
If you want one tool that does the work and tracks AI visibility, keep Surfer, and step up to Pro only when you pass one client site. If you run 5 to 10 client sites and want the most work done per dollar, try Frase Scale. If budget decides, NeuronWriter Diamond is the cheapest per project by far and adds almost no dashboards. Clearscope suits teams with many reviewers and modest drafting volume. Semrush is a measurement suite first; buy it when AI-visibility reporting is something you bill for, not something you'll look at.
What we couldn't verify
- Time saved. We haven't timed any of these tools. The "removes a task" and "adds a report" labels come from each vendor's feature list.
- Surfer's monthly prices. The page showed only annual prices and the yearly saving.
- Clearscope's annual pricing and how often its tracked queries refresh.
- Semrush's paid plans in use. We read its pricing page but haven't reviewed the plans, so there's no verdict on them.
- Vendor claims about rankings, AI citations or autonomous publishing are the vendors' own.
