Surfer SEO alternatives for agencies: priced per client, not per feature

· Agency Brief

Most "Surfer alternatives" lists compare feature checklists. An agency owner has a different question: what does content optimisation cost per client site, and what happens when the client book grows? A tool that's cheap for one site and expensive for ten is the wrong tool for an agency, however good its editor is.

We kept Surfer on KEEP in Issue #1 for SEO and content shops: its MCP is out of beta for Pro plans and up (Surfer, October 9, 2026). This piece is for agencies that think they're overpaying, or that are about to step up a plan.

Every price below comes from the vendor's own pricing page, checked on October 18, 2026. Prices are USD and exclude tax. Where a page didn't say something clearly, we say so.

Surfer: KEEP (the baseline)

Price: On annual billing, Surfer lists Discovery at $49/month, Standard at $99/month, Pro at $182/month and Peace of Mind at $299/month. A separate AI Search Analytics plan for tracking AI visibility is $82/month billed yearly (Surfer pricing). Annual plans are charged up front (Surfer pricing). Surfer shows prices in EUR to EU visitors; we list the USD prices shown to US visitors (checked Oct 19, 2026). The numbers are the same in both currencies, not converted: Standard, for example, is 99 USD or 99 EUR per month billed yearly (Surfer pricing). Surfer's help center says it bills in USD or EUR (Surfer: billing details).

Flag: the pricing page we loaded showed only the annual figures. It labels the yearly saving per plan (for example "Save $240" on Standard), and its FAQ says annual billing saves "up to 17%" versus monthly (Surfer pricing). That implies a monthly price of around $119 for Standard, but we couldn't see monthly prices displayed, so confirm them at checkout.

What matters for agencies: Surfer's plan comparison lists 1 team seat on Discovery, 3 on Standard, 5 on Pro and 10 on Peace of Mind, and 120 documents on Discovery, 360 on Standard and Pro, and "Unlimited" on Peace of Mind* (the asterisk: "Fair usage policy applies") (Surfer pricing). Standard tracks 25 AI prompts refreshed weekly; Pro tracks 50 and Peace of Mind 100, both refreshed daily. Pro adds multiple brand spaces and a cannibalisation report, and Peace of Mind adds "uncapped optimization" and API access (Surfer pricing). MCP access, which lets Surfer data flow into the AI tools you already use, is Pro and up (Issue #1).

The catch: Standard and Pro carry the same 360-document allowance, so moving to Pro buys you two more seats, daily prompt refreshes and MCP, not more content volume. Standard includes 1 brand workspace (one site), Pro 5; above 5 client sites you need Peace of Mind. On annual plans, Surfer's FAQ says credits reset yearly (or when you change plan), so pace your documents across the year (Surfer pricing). Seats and documents decide your cost per client: at Pro's $182/month, that's about $36 a seat.

Clearscope: WATCH (unlimited users, but drafts cap at 20 a month)

Correction (Oct 23, 2026): we previously described Clearscope as expensive for small teams. Per client, with one Surfer workspace per site, it's cheaper at 5 and 10 clients; what limits it is drafting volume. We've updated the label.

Price: Essentials is $129/month (50 tracked queries, 50 pages, 20 Topic Explorations and 20 drafts a month). Business is $399/month (300 tracked queries, 300 pages, 50 Topic Explorations, 20 drafts and a dedicated account manager). Enterprise is custom (Clearscope pricing).

What matters for agencies: unlimited users and unlimited projects on every plan (Clearscope pricing). That's the opposite of a per-seat tool: freelancers and client reviewers cost nothing extra. Query tracking covers ChatGPT and Gemini. There's no minimum contract on monthly plans, and Clearscope says you can cancel anytime (Clearscope pricing). Extra pages are sold as add-ons ($25/month on Essentials, $15/month on Business, per the add-on table).

The catch: the entry price is higher than Surfer's annual Standard, and 20 drafts a month on both paid tiers is a hard limit for a content shop. We didn't see an annual discount on the page. Clearscope fits an agency with many reviewers and modest volume.

Frase: TRY (the most agency-shaped plan)

Price: Starter is $39/month billed yearly or $49 month to month (1 seat, 1 site). Professional is $103/month yearly or $129 monthly (3 seats, 5 sites). Scale is $239/month yearly or $299 monthly (5 seats, up to 10 domains). Extra seats are $29/month on Professional and Scale (Frase pricing).

What matters for agencies: Frase's Scale plan is the only one here that the vendor explicitly prices by domains and pitches at agencies, with "client-ready reports you can export for every client" (Frase pricing). That makes per-client maths easy: at $239/month yearly across 10 domains, that's about $24 per client site. Scale includes 100 articles and 1,000 audit pages a month. Frase says overages are off by default; if you turn pay-as-you-go on, Scale charges $4 per extra article, $0.40 per audit page and $0.20 per AI prompt (Frase pricing).

The catch: white-label reports and a branded client portal are Enterprise only (Frase pricing), so the Scale reports carry Frase branding. Frase also leans hard on an agent that can publish on its own. Keep that switched off for client sites until you trust it. Frase's ranking and AI-citation outcomes are its claims; it says itself that it won't promise a ranking inside a trial.

NeuronWriter: TRY (if budget is the constraint)

Price: Five plans, billed monthly or yearly: Bronze $23/month or $230/year, Silver $45 or $450, Gold $69 or $690, Platinum $93 or $930, Diamond $117 or $1,170. NeuronWriter labels yearly billing "2 months free" (NeuronWriter pricing, checked 2026-10-19). The plan block on NeuronWriter's homepage still showed the earlier yearly figures ($19 to $97 a month) when we checked, so go by the pricing page.

What matters for agencies: NeuronWriter describes Gold as "for a team of copywriters or a small agency" and pitches Diamond at an agency "responsible for multiple projects." From Gold up you get unlimited team members, WordPress, Shopify and Search Console integrations, the option to use your own OpenAI key, and what the plan cards list as "Neuron API/MCP/AI Assistant" (NeuronWriter pricing, checked 2026-10-19). NeuronWriter says MCP access, for connecting AI assistants such as Claude, is included from Gold up at no extra cost (NeuronWriter MCP, checked 2026-10-19). Diamond includes 50 projects and 150 documents a month (shown as 1,800 a year on the Yearly view) (NeuronWriter pricing, checked 2026-10-19). At the yearly price that works out to under $2 per project a month ($1,170 ÷ 12 ÷ 50 = $1.95).

The catch: AI-answer monitoring is thin: 10 to 20 tracked questions on the agency tiers, with more sold as an add-on (NeuronWriter pricing). We didn't evaluate recommendation quality against Surfer's. Run both on the same brief before you switch. NeuronWriter's refund policy covers the first plan you buy, within 30 days.

How to test before you switch

  1. Count your real unit. Write down how many client sites, how many optimised articles per month and how many people touch the tool. Price each option against those numbers, not the plan names.
  2. Run one brief through two tools. Same keyword, same writer. Measure edit time to a client-ready draft and compare the recommendations, not the score.
  3. Check AI-visibility limits separately. Every vendor here now sells AI-answer tracking, and the prompt counts differ a lot. If you report AI visibility to clients, remember that being mentioned isn't the same as being cited (Semrush AI Visibility Index).
  4. Switch at renewal. Surfer charges annual plans up front and says you keep access until the end of the paid period if you turn off auto-renewal (Surfer pricing). Put the date in your calendar.

Verdict

If Surfer's MCP and AI-visibility features are part of how you deliver, keep Surfer, and remember that Pro adds seats and daily prompt refreshes, not documents. If you run 5–10 client sites and want a per-domain price you can put in a proposal, try Frase Scale. If budget is the constraint, NeuronWriter Diamond is the cheapest per project by a wide margin. Clearscope makes sense when you have many reviewers and low volume.

What we couldn't verify: Surfer's monthly prices (only annual figures were displayed), what Surfer's fair-usage cap on "Unlimited*" documents is, Clearscope's annual pricing, and any vendor's claims about rankings or AI citations. We'll update this page when the vendors publish clearer terms.
